Radeon 7000 RDNA 3: AMD is a big heavyweight for the following graphics cards

During the AMD Finacial Analyst Day conference, the company presented news about all its projects. Perhaps most awaited is the new generation of AMD RDNA 3 graphics cards.

For several years, AMD has successfully recast its name in the processor space against ARM and Intel. On the other hand, in the graphics card sector, the results were more uneven. Admittedly, AMD is on the cutting edge and has succeeded in re-positioning itself as a competitor with the RDNA 2 generation, but the company is still behind Nvidia on many points.

Even worse, it now sees Apple and Intel come into its own territory with their own solutions. It’s not all bleak for AMD’s graphics division, which nonetheless benefits from the large gaming hardware market: PlayStation, Xbox and Steam Deck consoles combine AMD’s solutions.

The brand must now continue this high-speed progression with the next generation of RDNA 3. And that’s basically what it was able to promise during the Financial Analyst Day conference, designed to assess its roadmap with investors.

+ 50% performance per watt

RDNA 3 is the name of the next architecture for the AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards, and therefore they will be the competitors to the future Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 cards. This is not a conference dedicated to graphics cards and AMD has not gone into details about the RDNA 3 architecture, but the first information is reassuring.

First, AMD promises to move to 5nm manufacturing, most likely the TSMC N5 process. This rebranding should indeed present a huge surplus of improvement over the TSMC 7N used with the RDNA 2 architecture. Associated with the structural changes, AMD promises power efficiency gains of over 50% (performance/watt). This is a huge leap forward and the second in two generations since AMD RDNA 2 actually delivered a 50% increase over RDNA 1.

Some of you may be wondering what this energy efficiency means. It’s simply the relationship between performance and power consumption, also called “performance/watts,” an indicator widely used by AMD and Nvidia. The higher this ratio, the better the card’s performance.

Performance per watt is a very important data for a graphics chip. A gain of more than 50% means that graphics cards will use up much less with equal performance for more efficient laptops or desktops.

The first GPU with a “chiplet” design

To achieve this efficiency gain, AMD mentions an optimization of the “graphics pipeline” and a change in the architecture of the “computing units,” the main execution centers of the Radeon graphics card. The company did not go into detail on these points. We hope that the new arithmetic units will work better with accounts ray tracingthe major weakness of RDNA 2.

Even more interesting, AMD is confirming years of rumors by promising that RDNA 3 will be a “chiplet” design generation. This is a more modern approach to processor design that has already been adopted by AMD for its Zen processors. However, it is very difficult to apply it to graphics chips due to the mass of data that will be transmitted and processed in parallel, compared to a more traditional central processor.

So AMD is addressing this topic that could give it a clear lead over its competitors if the company can actually implement it. The industry agrees that chip design represents the future of graphics chips and that AMD could be the first to achieve this core for such a powerful graphics chip. It remains to be seen how the company solves this data processing problem to create a microchip design. The brand may be using technology similar to Apple UltraFusion, the solution Apple used to create the Apple M1 Ultra by connecting two Apple M1 Max chips.

It is clear that AMD will not stop with the planned release of RDNA 3 Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards before the end of 2022. The company has already promised to release the RDNA 4 architecture by 2024. Manufacturing will be on advanced process ‘, without further details.
