Calgary – The Montreal Aloets kicked off the 2022 season, showing great resilience against the Calgary Stampeders, who won 30-27.
It was veteran Rene Paredes’ 38-yard field goal 29 seconds left in the final quarter that gave the Stamps a 1-0 win, which also lost a big chunk: Bo Levi Mitchell didn’t finish. It was Jake Mayer who played the last two offensive sequences for the locals.
This was Paredes’ third successful field goal, who also had a hit for 41 and 23 yards.
Alois recovered the ball at the 43rd line with 21 seconds left, but they couldn’t get close enough for David Cottier to equalize. Vernon Adams Jr. tried to pass everything in the last game of the game, but the Stamps defense dropped her in the end zone.
Côté had field goals from 26 and 23 yards. William Stanback, Dominic Davis and Adams scored a goal for Aloit (0-1) in the loss.
The streak of winners came from Old Curry (twice) and Malik Henry.
From the very first moments of the match, Harry Jones’ side has been deprived of three key players, not least: running back and finalist for the 2021 CFL Player of the Year William Stanback, and specialist girl Mario Alford returning, too. As defensive back Greg Reed.
William Stanback was seriously injured
Of the three, Stanback is the most worrisome, not just because of what he represents for Elwett’s offense, but because of the severity of the injury. The run was turned back off the field after he made a very low tackle from Tre Roberson in the second quarter. He was taken to Calgary Hospital with the team doctor.
Alford was hit in the abdomen, while Reed was hit in the knee.
Despite these harsh blows, Alwette remained in the match until the end.
Adams started his season poorly. In the first offensive sequence, Adams was the victim of an interception. On his first pass attempt this season, the Alouettes quarterback saw the ball deflected by excellent defensive lineman Mike Rose, who raised his right arm at the right moment. Then defensive back Deonte Ruffin touched the ball before Rose caught it with a dive.
Adams intercepted on his first pass of the season
The Stampeders took charge in the Alouettes’ 49-yard line. After six matches, Henry scored his first major in 2022.
However, Adams recovered well from the following sequence. In a second play and 11, he joined Eugene Lewis at 55 yards to get the ball into the 20 homeowners line. After four plays, he found Stanback as free as air on the left side and joined him in a seven-yard play to allow the Alouettes to tie the game.
The Alouettes quarterback suffered another interception in the third quarter. The Stamps resumed with a prime position, but their indiscipline limited them to a 23-yard field goal from Paredes, bringing them closer to 24-20.
Montreal suffered another costly turn in the late third quarter, when Rose raised his right arm to fend off Côté’s attempt to land the 35-yard field goal. The Stampeders took the ball back to the 46 streak, a streak that ended early in the fourth quarter with Carey’s second touchdown in the game, making the Stampeders 27-24. Reflection 10 points in favor of the locals.
The Alawites play their second game next Thursday, when they visit the Toronto Argonauts.
