Between Tesla, which designed its own operating system, and Google, which is putting Android Automotive everywhere, Apple has been doing the bare minimum in the automotive sector. CarPlay was just an iPhone version with a revamped interface. In 2022, Apple is going much further.
With the increase in the size and number of screens inside cars, a change had to be made. Especially by being more deeply integrated into the car. At WWDC 2022, Apple showed that it is working with automakers to go a long way.

The CarPlay interface now uses multiple screens, including the dashboard, so it includes basic data from the car. You can adjust the ventilation and check its speed.
This interface necessarily requires a much stronger collaboration with car manufacturers since integration goes along the way. Apple also said the new system will allow drivers to customize the CarPlay experience using the colors, backgrounds and layouts of displays, as well as different themes and styles for the instrument cluster.
Apple is known to be working internally on a self-driving electric car, but the company has never announced anything. This new CarPlay integration is definitely the closest thing to an Apple car, however, we’ll have to wait to see how this will be integrated. Is it a new version of CarPlay with a similar process or is it a deeper integration of the Apple operating system into the car itself? From what we understand, the new CarPlay sits between Android Auto (screen mirroring) and Android Automotive OS (a system built into the car).
Google is one step ahead
Apple is already late. Google is about to impose Android Automotive, as the US group wants to harmonize the electronics increasingly found in cars. This is an “automated” version of the system that already powers four out of five mobile phones in the world … We already find Android Automotive, as an infotainment system, in Volvo, Ford, Lucid, Stellants or even Renault.
As Tesla explained, the car is changing: it is now full of electronic components in disarray, has a large screen as a dashboard, software applications for management and access to various functions and applications, software that simply needs an OTA update to add new ones …
The risks of this shift through the program are significant. It means a complete change in the economic model of the sector. This explains the significant investment by Google and Qualcomm in Formula 1 and Formula E.
In this new model, the value of the connected car is enhanced by artificial intelligence, data and software. Then Google’s ambitions in this sector become clear. So far, Google is winning the car operating system battle almost quietly. Now it becomes more clear.
