MSI has long had a good reputation on the PC side and we no longer offer graphics cards, motherboards or even Taiwanese brand laptops. On the screen side, the manufacturer has to face strong competitors, but offers a wide variety of products. We recently tested the Optix MPG321UR-QD, an ideal 4k display for next-generation consoles. But this time we are dealing with the goal of a “Core PC gamer”, with an Artymis 343CQR display in a 21:9 format and equipped with a curved panel.

Especially interesting “elongated” design for games FPS, TPS, simulation … and in general all 3D games. For work, 21: 9 is also very convenient, as it allows you to view two windows side by side very comfortably. Curvature is also a lot of fun to use, especially since this MSI monitor is 1000R. This means, concretely, that the curve is higher than the majority of other computer monitors of this type. For example, the Huawei Mateview GT, which we tested some time ago, is 1500 r.

The only 1000R curved screen we’ve tested so far is Samsung’s amazing Odyssey Neo G9, but this one is much bigger and bigger (49 inches diagonal, 32:9 aspect ratio). Therefore, MSI Artymis is in the midst of not without advantages.

Build and Design: The DNA of ‘Games’ is clear

For this 21:9 curved monitor, MSI chooses classic materials and design already seen. It is difficult to innovate in this form, but the result remains satisfactory, without being exceptional. À l’arrière, le plastique domine et aura tendance à craquer quelque peu, mais l’ADN de MSI est la : un logo et une bande diagonale éclairés en RGB et une partie striés apportent indéniablement race la attende “PC Master” no). RGB can be configured in 20 zones, with 7 different effects, via Mystic Light software.

Up front, it looks more sedate: the very thin frame accentuates the board well and the wide “V” foot holds the assembly well, which remains bulky and heavy: 9.17kg for the 80cm tall. So it will be necessary to save space on the desk.

Not surprisingly, the screen doesn’t rotate in portrait mode (a useless function like that), but it remains quite flexible. It can rise and fall more than 10 cm or less, rotate on an axis more than 30° and benefit from a tilt ranging from -5° to +20°. However, during use we found that the screen was still quite low, even in its highest position. The concern here is that the foot is too wide to fit easily on a raised part.

Connectivity-wise, this MSI monitor offers a classic DisplayPort 1.4, the only one that lets you go up to 165Hz. And the two HDMI ports are actually “2.0” only and you can’t go above 100Hz. The absence of HDMI 2.1, which allows up to 120 Hz, which becomes the new standard, especially on home consoles. However, this is not dangerous, because this monitor is not really intended for PS5 or Xbox Series X anyway, which did not adapt well to the 21:9 format.

There are also two USB-A ports, a USB-B port, and a USB-C port. The latter supports alternate display mode and can therefore transmit video streams of up to 80 Gbit / s. Suitable for use on a laptop, even if the power is not enough to power it on its own. Finally, the classic socket plug completes it all. The only way to get sound, since there are no built-in speakers.

Easy browsing in full OSDD menu

As on many modern monitors, the Settings interface (OSD) is navigated via a joystick located behind the screen, accompanied by two buttons. The ergonomics are very good and you move from one menu to another in a very smooth and enjoyable way. Several options are available: from classic “gaming” or “professional” image profiles to PIP activation (Picture-in-Picture, allowing two different sources to be displayed on the same screen, for example a PC and a console) By optimizing for sharpness, it is possible Customize many aspects very precisely.

Note that there is also a “Gaming OSD” program that transfers this interface to your computer, so it can be controlled with a mouse. However, you have to connect the monitor to your computer via a USB-B cable to make use of it which adds a cable.

Image quality: very good contrast ratio

As a reminder, we’re dealing with a VA panel on this MSI monitor. VA panels generally offer a very good contrast ratio and color rendering quality.

For our tests, we used the “sRGB” image profile with maximum brightness, all in SDR format (hence HDR crop). First note: the contrast ratio is already excellent because it goes up to 3790: 1. So, we have a very good depth of black, but also a well-defined white, thanks to the maximum brightness raised to 380 cd / m². Presentation is clean and very pleasing to the eye.

In HDR, the brightness is good and reaches 580 cd / m². So the compatible content will be pleasing to the retina.

The sRGB profile also has the advantage of rendering high-quality color scaling and balanced rendering. Thus, we have a Delta E of 2.6 and a color temperature of 6890 K. Remember that Delta E corresponds to the difference between “true” and on-screen colors and should be as low as possible. The ideal level should be less than 3 so that the discrepancy is not noticeable to the naked eye. So here we are at nails.

Color temperature makes it possible to judge the balance of presentation, between cool tints (which will pull towards blue) and warm tints (which will pull towards red). The correct balance is around 6500K. Again, here, we’re in average good.

1000R curvature improves immersion

Curvature at 1000R has its advantages and disadvantages: compared to a less powerful curvature at 1500R, as in most curved monitors, the image will be more rounded, which adapts well to all first-person video games. (FPS, simulation).

This obviously brings more immersion. For other uses, it’s a little different: for work, the ease with which we benefit from having two windows side by side is undeniable, but that’s due to the 21:9 format. Bending at 1500R tends to distort our vision somewhat, which can be annoying to use .

But video is still less convenient: in general, do not buy ultra-fast if you plan to watch movies and series, as you will end up with large black bars on the top and bottom, especially on the sides, as well as distortion associated with curvature. In short, in short: MSI’s 1500R curved monitor is specifically designed for video games, preferably 3D.

conclusion

strength point

  • design quality
  • full connection
  • Very good contrast ratio
  • Controlled colorimetry
  • Lots of options in OSD

Weak points

  • No HDMI 2.1
  • no speakers

The MSI Artymis monitor is a very good monitor, however it is intended for a very specific audience: thanks to its ultra-fast 21:9 format and strong curvature at 1500R, it is reserved above all for those who play video games on PC, especially FPS and emulation. In a configuration that goes well, it really pleases the parts to line up with such a wide field of view and the feeling of immersion is very good. For work, the format allows you to make multiple windows very comfortably, but the curvature of the board can be annoying for certain uses. We still regret the absence of HDMI 2.1 and the speakers.
