Finally something new
Starfield has been in development at Bethesda for more than seven years, and that’s expected at the juncture, because it’s been more than two decades since Bethesda gave us a new license. The game is expected in early 2023 for PC and the Xbox series and presents itself as a role-playing game set in space, always focusing heavily on its community.
The promise is that Starfield will have over a thousand planets to explore on a large scale, in a hundred star systems. The adventure takes place in the year 2330, when humanity left the solar system to colonize other planets. On this aspect, the excerpts focused during the Xbox & Bethesda presentation. We will play the role of a miner who joined a group called Constellation, which is trying to find rare artifacts. We will have to cross paths with other factions, such as the Colonial Confederation, trying to create a republic in the galaxy, while Ryujin Industries, as its name implies, will exploit the resources provided by the latter. Bethesda has announced five distinct factions, which we can join or avoid according to our desires.
According to the official letter, Starfield’s main quest will last between 30 and 40 hours:
This game is finally a bit longer than our previous games and we can still modify it. There are more missions, so there may be 20% more content compared to our previous games.
The focus was on the character editor that the studio claims is the most comprehensive Bethesda game has ever been made available. In addition to appearance, the player will be able to choose a starting class, with five skill trees: physical, social, combat, science, and technical. As in Oblivion, we can develop these trees in several areas, by allocating points, but also by using skills.
Not surprisingly, gathering resources for crafting is an important part of the gameplay and exploration, especially with the ability to build outposts on planets. These shelters play an important role in our exploration, as we can organize our resources there, while protecting ourselves and creating an access point to the planet, then being able to get back there in complete safety.
Added to this is a ship editor that allows you to build and improve your own spacecraft according to your needs, in exploration or even in combat. It will also be necessary to manage the crew members by assigning them their task.
The editor often compares Starfield to Skyrim, both in terms of its playability and in the importance of factions, particularly Constellation, the starting faction.
It’s like NASA meeting Indiana Jones and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a group of people still searching for answers. There are many factions in the game, but Constellation is the main group you will be participating in. It’s kind of similar to Skyrim in terms of the game structure, where you’re going to be who you want to be, and then there are different factions that you can join, and really make your way through.
The comparison does not stop there, because Todd Howard, in an interview with The Washington Post, boasts that Starfield contains more than 150,000 lines of dialogue, as in a game like Skyrim there are 60,000. It’s there that the narrative is again an important aspect of Starfield, while the developers wanted the player to take risks, particularly by trying to impress NPCs, as could have been the case in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
We still have to be a lot of patience before we learn more about Starfield, but there’s no doubt that Bethesda still has some great surprises waiting for its game, awaiting its release in early 2023.
